Alabama Wildlife Federation, Coastal Program The Alabama Wildlife Federation (AWF) is the oldest and largest non-profit conservation organization in Alabama. The AWF was established by sportsmen in 1935 to promote the conservation and wise use of our wildlife and natural resources and to ensure a high quality of life for future generations of Alabamians. Alliance Institute BP Oil Drilling Disaster Health Assessment and Evacuation Plan Development: The Alliance Institute is working with the Louisiana Public Health Institute and the Louisiana Bayoukeepers to establish an emergency health clinic. Alliance Institute also serves as the coordinating organization for passage of the Gulf Coast Civic Works Act (GCCWA). The Alliance Institute is working with a coalition of over 100 organizations across the gulf coast region and nationally to present civic works as a means of sustainable, economically sound, recovery for the gulf coast. Blue Legacy This is an effort to ensure that the spotlight does not go completely dark on the resources of the Gulf of Mexico now that the danger appears to be reduced and 74% of the oil declared “accounted for”. Alexandra Cousteau and her international Expedition Blue Planet team set out earlier this summer on a 138-day expedition across North America to explore critical water issues in Canada, Mexico and the U.S. The tour will cover 14,500 miles in an “interactive” expedition designed to challenge audiences to connect with local watersheds and discover the interconnectivity of global water issues. Coastal Restoration efforts in LA Grantees: Coalition to Restore Coastal LA, Center for Sustainable Engagement and Environment, Gulf Restoration Network and Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation. Since Katrina, these organizations have been collaborating with national NGOs, such as EDF and NWF to push the federal government and the state to develop a multiple lines of defense strategy for restoring the coastal wetlands. Isle de Jean Charles Band of the Biloxi Chitimacha The Biloxi-Chitimacha Confederation of Muskogees, Inc. is an alliance of three Indian communities located in Lafourche and Terrebonne parishes in the southernmost part of the state of Louisiana. These three Indian communities share a common history and are comprised of Biloxi, Chitimacha, Choctaw, Acolapissa and Atakapa Indian origins. Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation The Deepwater Horizon spill has impacted the Lake Pontchartrain Basin at the Chandeleur Islands and the Mississippi River Delta. The LPBF is entrusted by the public to protect and restore the habitats and water of the Pontchartrain Basin. We have performed this service for over 20 years by consistently applying basic science to monitor the health of the watershed. The introduction of spilled oil and the spill response now requires that LPBF monitor a new threat. Literacy Alliance of Greater New Orleans As part of our mission to increase adult literacy, we advocate to government, nonprofit and private organizations the need for Plain Language in the creation of communication materials on disaster recovery for the general public. Louisiana Bucket Brigade The Louisiana Bucket Brigade is a environmental health and justice organization working with communities that neighbor the state's oil refineries and chemical plants. Mennonite Disaster Service Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS) is a faith based agency. My Gulf Action by SmartPower My Gulf Action is a cutting-edge online campaign that shows Americans how to reduce their oil use through simple adjustments to their energy use behaviors. National Public Radio NPR is doing cross desk, 24/7 coverage of the environmental, social, political and economic issues created by the Gulf oil spill, and its correspondent Richard Harris was the first to cast serious doubts on BP's characterization of how bad the spill was. The Ordinary People Society (TOPS) Our Florida Support Operations are directly on the coast in spill affected areas. National Coordinator John Beebe has certification and clearance to perform testing, support and clean up operations in certain HAZMAT defined areas. TOPS will be measuring the Daily PPM of VOC compounds to alert if any areas reach above EPA safety thresholds.
