December 5th convening: Innovative mapping and data analysis efforts in environmental philanthropy

This timely convening will offer funders and their technical support partners the chance to share tools, products, and lessons learned through the various environmental grant mapping projects underway today, in order to maximize benefit to the field by harnessing the cumulative knowledge acquired through the various processes. EGA will host the event on December 5, following the launch of our interactive Tracking the Field database at our recent Annual Retreat this September.

This in-depth all-day salon will bring together experts breaking new ground on creating tools for funders and the foundations seeding these innovations— EGA’s Tracking the Field, the Foundation Center’s web portal on water, sanitation, and hygiene, the Great Lakes mapping project and mapping NGO and foundation efforts to curb coal in the USA. Our goal is to create user friendly tools that will help us to work better and smarter and it is critical that we have a baseline understanding of the state of the field and are able to share our analysis and insights in an efficient and timely manner with colleagues.

The invited funders and their technical support colleagues will highlight these innovations and their best practical use for funding strategies. Additionally, this event will serve as the beginning of strengthened coordination with EGA as the bridge to ensure that these unique and exciting developments both deepen and expand our ability as a community to use data and technology to improve environmental grantmaking.

One important element of our new strategic framework is ensuring that gatherings we organize do not occur in a vacuum or become one-offs. EGA is intentional about incorporating themes that rise up at these events in future webinars, EGA’s online Journal and connecting them to 2012 Fall Retreat and Briefings.

This session will introduce four innovative tools and answer the following questions. What were the goals of these efforts (both substantively, and related to innovative tools to be utilized)? What was the end result? What were the challenges and surprises, and the lessons learned? How will it be used? How do we optimize usage and learning? What are coordination opportunities and barriers?

Foundation program staff and technical colleagues will split into two groups with a facilitator. These groups will discuss: utilization, ease of use, and opportunities and barriers for coordination. Both Groups challenged with brainstorming on strategies, and coming back to full group to share insights and possible next steps.

2:30PM -4 PM ~ Full Group Discussion
Full group returns, shares insights and strategies. Presenters will lead discussion to begin to create a blueprint for how these many innovative efforts can begin to educate one another and coordinate.
